3-SECOND RULE:

The 3-Second Rule is:

When the vehicle in front of you passes a stationary object on the side of the road, begin counting “One-Thousand One, One-Thousand Two, One-Thousand Three”…Then, you should pass that same object.*

*One additional second is recommended for hazardous weather (rain, snow, etc.) or road conditions and construction areas.

Why drive the 3-Second Rule?

Over 20 years ago the National Safety Council recognized that the best way to determine the minimum safe following distance was to drive the 3-SECOND RULE.

Over half of our 50 states have adopted the 3-SECOND RULE in their Drivers Manual as the best way to determine the minimum safe following distance to avoid accidents. The remaining states recommend at least 2 seconds, with another second for hazardous weather or roads.

Most highway safety experts agree that a safe following distance is important to our driving safety and the 3-Second Rule is the best way to determine that distance at any speed.
